Mission Statement

To provide a caring, positive environment for those horses that have either been neglected, abused, abandoned, or at risk of going to slaughter. We will place these horses in an environment that benefits both the horse and the adoptive/foster family.

Holly’s Horse Haven Charity are a 24/7 critical care charity run on a 100% voluntary basis, we are the only cross border Equine rescue in Ireland with over 7yrs experience in the rehabilitation & re-homing of countless rescues that pass through our doors.

Holly’s Horse Haven voluntary group formed with hard work, dedication, and compassion for horses, this group of horse lovers originally began by taking in people’s misfit/unwanted horses. We are dedicated to preventing unnecessary slaughter, abuse, and neglect of horses. The centre established in 2007 as a home for Holly to prevent her from going to slaughter at the factory.

Holly’s Horse Rescue was established in 2007 as an Cross Border Equine Rescue organisation dedicated to preventing unnecessary slaughter, abuse, and neglect of horses. Holly’s Horse Haven joined forces with the ISPCA, Garda  / Northern Ireland Welfare & the PSNI in 2010 thus becoming a Cross Border equine critical care center whereby we both take in and adopt out in both areas including mainland UK.

Holly’s Horse Haven was founded by equine enthusiasts husband and wife Joe & Elaine Duffy, and the rest of their Holly’s Haven voluntary team .

Holly’s Haven Rescue is dedicated to all very special Equines who have come upon hard and difficult times (through no fault of their own) It was through the rescue of our first horse Holly that this group formed and with hard work, dedication, and compassion for horses, that the concept of Horse Haven was developed and put into action. This group of horse lovers originally began by taking in people’s misfit/unwanted/problem horses and by purchasing horses from “kill sales” at auction houses. The first rescue horses that they purchased to save from slaughter was a beautiful X race mare called Holly (click here for Holly’s’ story) .

Holly’s Haven Horse Rescue has experienced substantial growth as a powerful advocate for equine welfare Cross Border. Holly’s Horse Rescue hopes to support all government bodies in whatever way they can!

Horses that are donated to Holly’s Horse Rescue are placed in our adoption/foster  programmes, Holly’s Horse Haven accepts horses of all breeds and ages. Some horses come to us with permanent injury or medical problems, but most are donated by caring owners who for one reason or another just can’t keep their horse any longer, our rescue also works very closely with law enforcement officers and will house and care for horses that have been impounded..

OUR HOLLY’S SOCIAL HAVEN: Is our community/social inclusion network whereby we strive to support health care organisations across the country whose main aim is to continually work towards improving the personal needs and desires of those individuals in our communities who have “Special Needs” by offering a person centered plan which is tailored to each individuals needs.

Holly’s Social Haven pick some of the very special rescued equines from Holly’s Horse Haven charity to be integrated into our social integration, equine training & therapy programs, which is a relatively new type of rehab therapy which encourages those with special needs, youth, & troubled individuals to care and be responsible for others, it involves the caring for horses & our other animals as a means to accomplish this and grow as a person.

Also through our community inclusion network we encourage our children & cross community/cross border youth programmes to embrace animal welfare, we have found here at Holly’s Social Haven that promoting unconditional love towards our rescue horses, ponies & donkeys has proved to encourage a reduction in levels of aggression among special needs individuals by raising social & emotional competence by increasing empathy with our rescue’s. This offers an opportunity for “ALL” to develop and practice the skills they need to form healthy friendships!

We promote community spirit which encourages “ALL” to become  involved in supporting our rescue horses!

OUR SOCIAL HAVEN network is where our programmes encourage every individual (able bodied or “special needs”) to join in our endeavors to support the healing process of all our rescues, which in turn encourages every one involved to grow as a person while empowering them with the knowledge that they are “making a difference” in their own lives and the lives of our rescues.

Holly’s Social Haven selects and uses many of Holly’s Horse Haven Charities rescues to be integrated into their community social integration, training & therapy programs, a relatively new type of rehab therapy which encourages those with special needs, youth, & troubled individuals to care and be responsible for others, it involves the caring for horses as a means to accomplish this and grow as a person.

Caring for horses & support our special needs programmes can be financially taxing and With this current economic climate this is only the beginning of horse neglect in Ireland and every winter is a real concern!

With  the Celtic tiger’s financial woes depleting the nation’s resources, horses – for years central to our way of life – are becoming an un-affordable luxury and we now need any help or support we can get to help these graceful wonderful creatures move on to find a new life.we are always in need of funding for feed, medical, farrier care, supplies, services, and facility improvements. Holly’s Horse Rescue is funded by private donations and fundraisers.

We could not exist nor function without the support of amazing donors and volunteers.  Without the many volunteers that donate their time, we could not do what we do – there are no paid employees at Holly’s Horse Rescue, all work is done by volunteers.
